Attendees mingled, connecting over shared experiences and aspirations, setting a spirited tone for the days to follow.
Summit, Exhibition, and Workshops
Held at the Metropolitan Pavilion, day two began with check-in and a warm welcome by the BlackStars team, followed by an introduction from executive coach and moderator Dethra Giles. The opening remarks from Dr. Gena Lovett, author and former Boeing executive, set an empowering tone as she shared insights on leadership and growth.
Throughout the day, participants attended sessions featuring influential voices and industry giants. Mathematician Abdon Atangana’s fireside chat with Quita Highsmith, Genentech’s VP & Chief Diversity Officer, explored diversity’s impact in STEM fields, offering inspiration for aspiring scientists and mathematicians.
In another session, Verizon’s Rose Stuckey Kirk, Citi’s Richard Aby, and other corporate leaders discussed their journeys to the C-suite, sharing strategies for navigating and excelling in top-tier leadership roles. Panels on diversity, equity, and inclusion brought forward discussions on allyship and mentorship, with insights from Erika Irish Brown of Citi and JAZZ HOUSE KiDS’ founder Melissa Walker, highlighting the power of support networks.
In addition to leadership panels, sector-specific workshops, including “Seizing the Future” and “Breaking into Tech,” provided attendees with concrete career advice. From investment opportunities in Africa and the Caribbean to financial planning, each session gave professionals actionable strategies to create positive impact within their fields and communities. Derrick Johnson, President of the NAACP, delivered the closing keynote, underscoring the importance of community support and the commitment to equity and justice.
The day concluded with the BlackStars Connect networking mixer, a vibrant gathering of food, music, and dialogue that further reinforced connections and wrapped up the summit on a high note.
