Billionaire entertainment mogul, Tyler Perry, renowned for his iconic ‘Madea’ franchise, inked a multimillion-dollar deal with Netflix at the end of 2023 to produce content for the world’s largest movie-streaming platforms.
Under the new multi-year first-look deal, Perry, also an acclaimed actor and movie producer, will write, direct, and produce eight feature films over four years.
Netflix spent more than $17 billion on original content in 2023 with the figure expected to rise in 2024. Overall, American streaming platforms are responsible for a market the size of more than $80 billion.
With a burgeoning roster of blockbuster projects on his deck, Perry remains one of the leading American entertainment figures commanding great respect and recognition across the world. One of the upcoming films with Netflix is Six Triple Eight, starring an ensemble cast led by Kerry Washington. The film is about the inspiring true story of the first and only Women’s Army Corp unit of color to be stationed overseas during World War 2. Another one of the projects, Mea Culpa, starring Kelly Rowland, was released in early 2024. The former Destiny’s Child played the leading role of a criminal defense attorney who takes on the case of an artist who may or may not have murdered his girlfriend.
Perry is not a stranger to Netflix. He has worked with Netflix to churn out critically acclaimed projects, including A Jazzman’s Blues, a sweeping tale of forbidden love that made its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. There was also A Madea Homecoming, the 12th installment of the billion-dollar Madea franchise, and the thriller A Fall from Grace.

This Netflix partnership came after Perry signed a four-picture film deal with Amazon Studios, a U.S. television and film producer and distributor that operates as one of Amazon’s subsidiaries. The money involved in that deal has been rumored to be in eight figures.
