HBCU graduate’s third book, ‘how to graduate from college debt-free’, wins prestigious literary excellence award

Dr. Juan P. Chisholm, a native of Florida and graduate of an HBCU, was recently awarded the 2024 Pencraft Book Award for Literary Excellence for his book, Mission Possible: How to Graduate from College Debt-Free.

The book was named the Best Young Adult Book for Winter, recognized for its practical guidance on navigating college without relying on student loans. Chisholm’s message is rooted in his own experience: he completed his education at Florida State University and Florida A&M University College of Law without incurring debt. Now, as a 2024 Trio Achiever and a three-time author, he’s on a mission to help others do the same.

The recognition of Mission Possible comes at a time when student loan debt is a national concern, making the book’s insights especially relevant during November’s National College Application Month.

For many students and families facing steep tuition fees, Chisholm’s book offers a framework for accessing college without debt—a notion that might seem out of reach for many. Through step-by-step advice, Chisholm shows readers how to seek scholarships, grants, and other funding options to cover the costs of tuition, housing, and books. The book’s acclaim extends beyond the Pencraft Award; it has received honors from the American Book Fest, International Book Awards, Paris Book Festival, London Book Festival, and Florida Book Awards, highlighting its widespread impact.

Chisholm’s work addresses the growing desire among students to graduate with financial freedom. He argues that college is within reach for all students, regardless of economic background. As founder of the Graduate Debt-Free Club® and Young Investors®, Inc., Chisholm leads two organizations dedicated to promoting financial literacy among students and young adults. His organizations offer virtual classes covering financial planning, stock market basics, and methods for affording college without loans. Through his initiatives, Chisholm has reached a diverse audience, including high school and college students, educators, and parents, who look to him for straightforward advice on how to navigate the financial side of higher education.

Dr. Chisholm’s story began with his own pursuit of higher education. From an early age, he understood the challenges that financial constraints can pose, yet he was determined to earn a degree debt-free. This determination led him not only to graduate from Florida State University without loans but also to continue his education at Florida A&M University College of Law under the same principle. As a law student, he was twice awarded the Percy R. Luney Spirit of Service Award, further shaping his commitment to educational empowerment and service.

The success of Mission Possible is part of Chisholm’s broader commitment to financial literacy and education reform. As an advocate for students, he believes that debt-free education is achievable, though it requires a blend of strategic planning and a proactive search for resources. His book is structured to guide readers through this process, with an emphasis on setting goals, budgeting, and tapping into scholarships and grants. As students across the country begin their college application process this November, Chisholm’s work offers a timely reminder that higher education doesn’t have to come with financial burdens.

Chisholm’s achievements also include completing an executive education program in Strategic Finance for Smaller Businesses at Harvard Business School. His career now blends his roles as an author, educator, and business owner with his dedication to financial literacy advocacy. Chisholm and his wife, Audrey, live in Florida, where they raise their four children and continue to support students and families in their community.
