Franklin Reed has dedicated more than two decades to reshaping the tech industry through a steadfast commitment to diversity, inclusion and equity.

As the Executive Director of Global Inclusion, Diversity & Equity at TEKsystems, Reed oversees the company’s efforts to cultivate a diverse workforce and foster an inclusive culture. Over his 23-year tenure, he has helped TEKsystems exceed industry standards by placing diverse talent across 6,000 clients, positioning the company as a leader in diversity-driven innovation.

In an interview with blackstarsonline.com, Reed highlighted his most rewarding accomplishment: transforming lives through workforce development. “I’ve seen firsthand how a technology career can change the trajectory of an entire family,” he said. His work with organizations like Per Scholas Diverse By Design, where he serves as board chair, has created pathways for individuals from low-wage jobs to thriving careers in tech. “Being able to support individuals in obtaining certifications and shepherd them into meaningful careers is beyond what I could’ve imagined,” Reed added.

Reed’s decision to pivot from a lucrative business development career to the emerging field of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) was a bold risk that paid off. “When I transitioned to DEI, it was still in its infancy,” he said. “The payoff has been immeasurable—for the thousands of men and women who have found their voice, gained visibility, and achieved success because of our efforts.”

His work has proven that diversity is not just a moral imperative but a business necessity, contributing to TEKsystems’ reputation as a leader in inclusive hiring practices.

Beyond his corporate role, Reed’s dedication to community engagement is unwavering. He serves on the Advisory Board of CompTIA Spark and works closely with organizations that provide free technology education to underrepresented groups. His work with Per Scholas, a program offering technology training and certifications to historically excluded talent, exemplifies his commitment to breaking down barriers and expanding opportunities in tech.

Throughout his career, Reed has been guided by the unwavering support of his wife, Dayna Reed, whom he credits as the most significant influence in his professional journey. “She’s challenged my decisions and pushed me to maximize my potential,” he said. Reed also expressed gratitude to key leaders at TEKsystems, including Michelle Webb, Leaton Harris, and Jay Alvather, for their mentorship and encouragement.

Reed’s guiding philosophy is encapsulated in his mantra: “Grace, Grace, Grace.” He explained, “Grace for others, grace for myself, and grace for situations.” This principle underscores his leadership style, emphasizing empathy, resilience, and the importance of showing compassion in all aspects of life.

When asked what advice he would give to young professionals entering the workforce, Reed emphasized the value of diverse experiences and risk-taking. “Curate and collect new experiences with as broad a range of diverse individuals as possible,” he advised. “Put yourself out there. Ask questions. Don’t be afraid to fail.” His words reflect a belief in the power of curiosity and perseverance as essential tools for growth.

At the 2024 BlackStars Experience, Reed was one the distinguished honorees recognized for their outstanding contributions and impact. “I’m humbled, honored, and inspired,” he said. “The goals I set when I entered the DEI space were focused on driving change within my company, not on external recognition. Being acknowledged by my peers for this work is priceless.”
