Meet Johnnie Reid, the 61-year-old Black woman still running track

Johnnie Reid, a 61-year-old athlete from Naples, Florida, has become a global inspiration, proving that it’s never too late to reach new heights. The African American track and field star, who balances her career at the Collier County State Attorney’s Office with rigorous training, holds multiple world and national records in senior-level competition.

In April 2023, at the age of 60, Reid shattered the world record in the 60-meter dash at the USA Track and Field Masters Championship, clocking in at 8.49 seconds. Her achievement capped a lifetime of passion for speed that began on the tracks of Clewiston, Florida. As a high school student, she set enduring records in the 100-yard dash, but her greatest athletic feats came later in life.

Reid currently ranks as the world’s No. 1 senior athlete in the 50- and 100-meter events and holds the top spot in the U.S. for shot put in her age category. Despite these accolades, her journey has been marked by setbacks. Injuries and moments of self-doubt could have derailed her, but Reid’s resilience propelled her forward.

“Johnnie is a shining example of perseverance and determination,” said a spokesperson for USA Track and Field Masters. “Her ability to push boundaries at any age inspires athletes across generations.”

One of Reid’s career-defining moments came at the USATF Indoor Meet in Kentucky, where she broke the American record in the 50-meter race. That victory was particularly poignant as it came shortly after the death of her coach and mentor, Wayne Holloway. His guidance, she said, was instrumental in shaping her success.

“Wayne believed in me when I doubted myself,” Reid said in an interview. “Even though he’s gone, his influence is with me every time I step onto the track.”

Reid’s achievements extend beyond personal milestones. As a senior athlete and an African American woman, she represents resilience and pride for her community. Her story resonates with people from all walks of life, inspiring others to pursue their dreams, no matter their circumstances or age.

“Her legacy is about more than just medals,” said Wendy Morgan, a fellow athlete. “She shows us what’s possible when you stay committed and believe in yourself.”

Beyond her athletic accomplishments, Reid is deeply connected to her roots in Collier County. She sees her journey as a testament to the support of her family, friends, and local community. She often dedicates her wins to those who have stood by her side, emphasizing the importance of uplifting others.

Reid’s influence continues to grow as she challenges stereotypes about aging and athleticism. “Age is just a number,” she often says. “What matters is the drive you have and the work you’re willing to put in.”

As she looks to the future, Reid remains focused on breaking more records and inspiring more lives. For her, the finish line is never the end—it’s just the start of a new challenge.

Johnnie Reid’s journey is a powerful reminder that success is not limited by time or circumstance. Her story is one of strength, perseverance, and the relentless pursuit of greatness, both on and off the track.
