Courtney Daniella Boateng and Renee Kapuku are on a mission to help women win. Their vision is bold: to inspire and uplift one million women worldwide through a community they co-founded called The Modern Sisterhood (TMS). Built on the values of empowerment and collaboration, TMS has grown into a global organization aimed at supporting women’s personal and professional development through live events, retreats, and a wealth of online resources.

Boateng and Kapuku’s partnership began long before they co-created one of the fastest-growing sisterhoods. The two first met while in secondary school, bonding over shared ambitions to attend top universities. In 2015, their determination paid off as both women made history. Boateng became the first from her state school and family to attend the University of Cambridge, while Kapuku secured a spot at the University of Oxford, achieving the same distinction.

Their educational accomplishments laid the groundwork for their future successes. After graduating from Cambridge, Boateng transitioned into entrepreneurship, becoming a content creator and launching CDB London, a beauty brand. Kapuku’s journey took her to the United States, where she earned a master’s degree from Harvard Graduate School of Education before returning to the U.K. to pursue entrepreneurship in the education sector.

Despite their individual achievements, Boateng and Kapuku felt a need to address a gap they both recognized: the lack of community and sisterhood for women seeking personal growth. Boateng was particularly moved by the challenges faced by women who did not have the same foundational support that she and Kapuku had shared. This realization sparked an idea for a podcast that would offer advice, support, and empowerment to women around the world.

In 2019, the pair launched The Modern Sisterhood podcast. The response was overwhelming. The first episode drew over 1,000 downloads in its first week, and by the end of the month, the podcast was averaging 25,000 downloads. What began as a platform for sharing their experiences soon became the cornerstone of a much larger mission.

“Women needed a space where they could be open, honest, and uplifted by one another,” said Boateng. “We wanted to create that space—a community where women could grow and glow together.”

With the podcast’s rapid growth, Boateng and Kapuku realized that their vision for TMS extended far beyond digital platforms. They began organizing live events and retreats designed to foster in-person connections between women. These events allow participants to engage in workshops, share personal experiences, and form lasting relationships with like-minded women.

At its core, TMS is about building a community where women feel supported in every aspect of their lives, from career development to mental well-being. Kapuku emphasized the importance of collective growth. “Our goal is to make sure no woman feels alone in her journey,” she said. “We want to create spaces where women can connect, learn from each other, and build meaningful relationships.”

Today, TMS has evolved into a global movement, uniting women across borders and industries. The community’s reach has expanded through a combination of online content, in-person events, and resources tailored to women’s unique needs. Whether it’s offering guidance on entrepreneurship, mental health, or navigating societal pressures, TMS has become a trusted source of support for its members.

Despite the challenges of building a global organization, Boateng and Kapuku remain committed to their mission. “We’re just getting started,” said Boateng. “There’s so much more we want to achieve. Our goal is to inspire one million women to rise, and we’re confident we can get there.”
